Pro skater Paul „P-Rod“ Rodriguez spent two decades becoming one of the most decorated athletes in skateboarding history — 8 X Games medals, Nike’s first-ever skate signature shoe, 30 years on a board. But his real bet wasn’t on himself as an athlete. It was on building something that could outlast him.
In 2008, P-Rod launched Primitive Skateboarding as a sneaker shop that, through equal parts accident and ambition, grew into a $20M skate and apparel empire with collabs stretching from Dragon Ball Z to OutKast.
In this episode, Paul pulls back the curtain on the accidental gold spray paint experiment that sold 500 limited boards in two minutes flat — and convinced him to pivot Primitive Skateboarding into a full skate brand. He breaks down the mindset he borrowed from skating to navigate business: why focusing on the disaster creates the disaster, how to stay present while chasing a long-term vision, and why naming a brand after yourself is the fastest way to cap its ceiling.
Plus, the son of comedy legend Paul Rodriguez Sr. gets real about growing up watching someone live their dream at the highest level and how that rewired everything he believed about money, ambition, and what it actually means to sell out.
